On August 12, 2026, the Department of English Sports Club at the University of Science & Technology Chittagong (USTC) successfully organized the ‘Dr. Nurul Islam Memorial Tournament 2026’ at the G-Block ground.
The event featured two distinct competitive segments: the DE Men’s Football Tournament and the very first DE Women’s Handball Tournament.
The grand opening ceremony began with welcoming the Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Solaiman, Vice Chancellor of USTC, followed by the ceremonial unveiling of the tournament trophies and the rendition of the National Anthem.
Distinguished guests—including Mohammad Shahangir Biswas, Advisor, SWAC, Md. Abdul Motaleb Bhuiyan, Proctor , Dr. Mohammad Jakaria Habib, Chairman, Department of English and the respected Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Solaiman—shared inspiring insights on discipline, sportsmanship and teamwork with the student-athletes.Program convener Md. Nayeem Islam, Lecturer in the Department of Bangladesh, South Asia and Global Studies, delivered the concluding remarks before an energetic student flash mob officially launched the games.
The competitive action saw eight football teams battle through knockout rounds beginning August 12, 2026, while four handball teams took to the court starting August 16, 2026.
On August 17, 2026, the Grand Finale took place in the presence of Dr. Gurupada Chakraborty, Dean, FSSH, USTC and Dr. Mohammad Jakaria Habib, Chairman, Department of English.The thrilling double Grand Finale showcased unwavering dedication from all the players.
The celebrations concluded with two separate award ceremonies. On August 17, 2026, “Dell Phoenix” were crowned as Handball Champion, while on August 18, 2026, “Dell Powersurge” took home the Football championship trophy.
The tournament highlighted how crucial sports are for life outside the classroom.
